VIDEO: Supporters Say 'Goodbye' to Broken Angel House

Neighbors and supporters from near and far bid a final farewell to a neighborhood institution

Friday afternoon, around 100 or so supporters gathered at 4 Downing Street in Clinton Hill to bid farewell to a neighborhood landmark and architectural wonder, Broken Angel House.

The iconic structure is the brainchild of its owner, 82-year-old artist Arthur Wood, who purchased the home in 1979 with his late wife, Cynthia.

For many Brooklynites, particularly those who have lived in the neighborhood for 20 years or more, Broken Angel serves as a hidden gem to the rest of New York and one of the last remaining signatures of Brooklyn's creative uniqueness.

After a fire in 2006 and a subsequent foreclosure battle which ended unsuccessfully, Wood marked his last day at Broken Angel with an outdoor block party and bar-b-que.

The good-bye party was attended by supporters and well-wishers from near and far-- many of them artists, musicians and poets-- who have come to know, love and respect Arthur Wood and view the Broken Angel as a veritable neighborhood institution.

Neighbors gathered not only to say goodbye, but also raise funds for Wood's legal fees, to help find him a new home and to commemorate 4 Downing Street's legacy which, for Broken Angel's supporters, surely will live on long after the building is gone.
