Crown Heights School Bans Facebook, Fines Students
One private school has banned the social networking site and fined students who did not delete their profiles – should more schools follow suit?
The head of Beis Rivkah High School in Crown Heights, a private all-girls school, has banned students from using Facebook, and has even fined 33 of the girls $100 each for using the social networking site, says the Daily News.
Head administrator Rabbi Benzion Stock told the News, “there is a lack of privacy and dignity” on Facebook, and that all 495 students were required to sign a formal contract saying that they would not use the site this year. Accoridng to the article, the fined students would be refunded at the end of the school year if their Facebook accounts remained deleted.
“Some people object because of modesty, but I still don’t agree with that ... I’m friends with my mom [on Facebook],” sophomore Sarah Freid, who deleted her profile and paid the fine, told the News.
