Community Service Efforts Build on Dr. King's Dream

Habitat for Humanity honors King's dedication to community service; Restoration Junior Dance Company Performs

The legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. was honored on Sunday at PS 54, Samuel C. Barnes School, through music, dancing and speeches from the neighoborhood's community leaders.

The event, "Building on the Dream," was hosted by Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization that helps to build homes in underserved communities. The Restoration Junior Dance Company performed a few pieces from its annual MLK celebratory performance.

Earlier in that morning, Habitat for Humanity, through a partnership initiative with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) finished its work on Lafayette Gardens, painting and restoring the housing project's community center.

Executive Director Josh Lockwood said that more than 100 residential units are planned for construction in Bedford-Stuyvesant by Habitat for Humanity families and volunteers-- what Lockwood called "sweat for equity." Upon completion, local residents can then purchase the units at a low mortgage rate.
