College outreach comes early for Bed-Stuy pre-schoolers

Each year, the hosts a community service day, a way for the college to connect with local community organizations and give back.

On Wednesday, for its yearly service day, the college held a book drive, from which they were able to collect more than 250 books to donate to the daycare center, Little Sun People.

“Our peer ministry group got together with faculty and staff and students for this year’s event. We thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to give back to a local organization, Little Sun People,” said Kersha Smith, campus director of the College of New Rochelle. “The center is an amazing place, with an amazing staff and we’re really happy we can help them continue to grow and do the great work they do.”

Little Sun People Day Care, located in Restoration Plaza, offers a full range of educational programming for pre-schoolers as well as for elementary students ages K - 3. Classes include Computer Science, Arts and Crafts, Dance and Swahili. There's even a small "zoo" on the premises with a number of small animals.

The tiny little sun people beamed from ear to ear at the site of the cart filled with books. As a show of appreciation, each group of pre-schoolers presented the college faculty with handmade “thank you” cards.
