Police Blotter: Cab Driver Dodges Bullets on Hancock

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 81st Precinct

Crime is up 50 percent in the 81st precinct (24 incidents versus 16), for the week of January 9 - January 15, compared to this same week in 2011. For the month, crime is down 14 percent (92 incidents versus 107), compared to this same 28-day period last year. And year to date, crime is down 18 percent (44 incidents versus 54), for this same time period in 2011.

Shooting:

On Saturday, January 21, at approximately 11:30 p.m., an unknown perpetrator fired rounds in the direction of a livery cab driving along Hancock Street toward Howard Avenue.

According to the police report, two officers were on patrol near the area when they heard gunshots coming from Hancock Street. They drove around to investigate the scene and got a call about a distressed cab driver who had been nearby during the shooting.

The cab driver reported he had just picked up three passengers. When he began to drive away, he heard 3 gunshots; one hit the car and broke the driver-side rear window.

One of the passengers directed the cab driver to keep driving to Bainbridge and Ralph, at which point all three of the passengers jumped out and ran into Breevort Houses.

Police have not caught up with any of the people involved with the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

In other news, the 81st Precinct would like to announce that Deputy Inspector Juanita Holmes has been promoted to Inspector. The ceremony for her promotion will be held Friday, January 27, 11:00 a.m., at One Police Plaza. As of now, Inspector Holmes will remain assigned to the 81st Pct.
