Block Assn. Wants Fewer Trucks on Classon

The CLEXY Block Association has proposed new signage on Classon Avenue, to steer away trucks leaving the Barclays Center arena.

The CLEXY Block Association, which focuses on Classon, Quincy and Lexington avenues in Bed-Stuy, will be out in full force this weekend, circulating a petition for a “No Left Turn” sign at the intersection of Atlantic and Classon avenues, to help clear up Barclays Center arena construction traffic from residential streets, according to Brownstoner.

The group also wants to see more signage designating Bedford Avenue as the route for eastbound arena traffic to access the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Laura Benko president of CLEXY, wrote in the following to Brownstoner: “Streets along Atlantic preceding Classon have all “No Left Turn” signs, except for Classon. Classon is almost exclusively a residential street and yet it is being targeted to carry the load of thousands of more cars for event traffic leaving the stadium. In addition, it is a non-truck route, yet the DOT does not answer hundreds of our 311 requests to get signage that says: “No Trucks (Except for Deliveries).”

, which will involve the conversion of Classon Avenue into a one-lane street between Putnam and Myrtle avenues, and an increase in the road's width where traffic was a problem. But, According to the New York Times’ The Local, CLEXY members reported that they had not seen the DOT’s plans, and were still worried about “traffic from the planned Barclays Center arena on Atlantic Avenue, pedestrian safety, and signage on Classon Avenue.”

The CLEXY Block Association, who say they have 400 signatures on their petition already, will man a table at the corner of Lexington and Classon avenues on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to Brownstoner.
