Bike Month Comes to Brooklyn

Making the most of your two wheels

To celebrate this month all things bicycling, there are a bevy of free events in the borough for family riders and solo riders alike.

This weekend start by helping yourself to free classes about bicycling and sharpen your skills:

May Biking Activity Schedule
Sat, May 7, 10:00am-1:00pm - Bicycling Basics: this free 2-hour class for adults and mature teens will help you improve or learn basic bicycling skills to get around in the city safely.

Sun, May 8, 10:00am-2:00pm - Traffic Skills 101 Part Two is the second of a two part session that teaches you to know your rights and responsibilities as a New York City cyclist in four hours. Sun, May 8, 6:00pm - Fix Your Bike Workshop at Time’s Up! Brooklyn Space: 99 South 6th Street in Williamsburg.

If you’re already roaring to go for a ride there are several choices this weekend:

Check out the future Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway Bike Tour on Sat, May 7, 10:00am-1:00pm. This all ages 10-mile ride starts at the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center at 1205 Manhattan Avenue and ends in Red Hook along the planned route of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. For a longer ride, there is a 35 mile ride from Manhattan to Brooklyn with Social Sundays: Join New York Cycle Club for a leisurely ride from City Hall to Coney Island across the Brooklyn Bridge on Sun, May 8, 9:30am. Meet at City Hall opposite Brooklyn Bridge Pathway. Contact: The New York Cycle Club.

Or try this 40-mile ride: Brooklyn Sides and Subs on Sun, May 8, 10:00am. Ride the side streets in areas lesser known in Brooklyn. Meet at Grand Army Plaza entrance to Prospect Park at Flatbush Avenue and Eastern Parkway. Contact: Five Borough Bicycle Club. RSVP at daytrips@5bbc.org or (347) 688-2925.

Wed, May 11, 7:30-9:30pm - 6th Annual Bike Night at the Brooklyn Brewery! Party down with fellow riders with $1 drafts at the Brooklyn Brewery at 79 North 11th Street in Williamsburg. RSVP at.

Thu, May 12, 7:00pm - Movie Monkey Ride. Enjoy a ride that ends with a free film screening at the Brooklyn Free Store. Meet at Tompkins Square at 7pm and then at 7:30pm at the Brooklyn end of the Williamsburg Bridge ending at the Brooklyn Free Store at 220 Walworth Street. Contact: freeNYC@gmail.com.

Sat, May 14, 9:30am - 11:30am and 12:00 - 2:00pm,  Learn to Ride for Adults. Classes located at the Brooklyn Bridge Park at Water Street at New Dock Street in DUMBO.

Sat, May 14, 10:00am-1:00pm. Learn to Ride for Kids. All cyclists required to wear helmets and have a bicycle that fits and is best for children ages 5 and up.
