Bed-Stuy's Santigold Releases Second Album

Spin magazine recently profiled pop singer Santi White, a.k.a. Santigold, who recently released a new album (Master of My Make-Believe), and just so happens to be a Bed-Stuy resident, to boot.

Santigold, 35, grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, but moved to Brooklyn after graduating from Wesleyan College in the mid-90s, says the article. The singer recently moved to a townhouse in the neighborhood (about seven blocks away from her old place), “to stay a step ahead of the ripple of gentrification,” says Spin.

There’s a price to pay for that, though, as the article mentions a morning in March where the singer stepped out to find her Escalade SUV stripped by thieves.

And though Santigold has had a bumpy career, with absent management and an unsupportive former label, she still managed to put out two albums, with eight singles between them so far, as well all collaborations with big names like GZA, Pharrell Williams, the Beastie Boys and M.I.A. 

Today, she even hangs with Bed-Stuy royalty like Jay-Z.

"I get embarrassed because he's really witty and I'm not. I miss every joke and then he just stops writing me back,” she told Spin of her texting habits with the mega-rapper.
